Doyel’s Life Story
Born on September 8, 1952, in Patton’s Hospital in Palestine, Texas, Doyel Jr. was the first child of Doyel and Carrine Hunt. In 1956 Doyel Sr. relocated his wife with their two boys and one girl to Houston, Texas, for better employment opportunities. In Houston, Doyel Jr. grew up drawing, playing marbles, reading comic books, and participating in sports. He accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized at an early age. He attended Blackshear Elementary and Reynolds Elementary School, Carter G. Woodson Junior School, and Evan E. Worthing High School.
At Worthing, Doyel Jr. ran track and played the safety position for the Colts football team. Considered a good player, one could see his eyes darting back and forth, ever watching to tackle a player and keep him from advancing. Doyel Jr. married Caralon Houston in 1970. The couple welcomed a son, Joseph Darel Hunt, to their family on January 25, 1971. A year later, Doyel Jr. was drafted into the U.S. Army as the nation continued its military operations in the Vietnam War. During his 16-year armed services career, he was stationed at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas; Oahua, Hawaii; and Seoul, Korea, where he met and married Yun Suk Chang at the American Embassy in 1975. Baby girl Angella Morris was born June 9, 1977, to this union.
After an honorable discharge from the Army, Doyel was employed as a security guard. He eventually became a certified substance abuse counselor and was employed by Cenikor long-term recovery organizations in Baton Rouge, La., and Denver, Colo. Doyel joined the ES Community Church under the leadership of Pastor Darel Hunt. Although he faced numerous health challenges in his latter years, he seemed to take them in stride. Doyel maintained a positive outlook during his weekly medical treatments. He was an avid football fan, who favored the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos. He will be remembered for his joviality and laughter. Doyel transitioned to his heavenly home on February 4, 2025.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Doyel and Carrine Hunt, maternal grandparents, Bob and Jettie Davis, paternal grandparents, Joseph and Lela Bell Hunt, and his grandson, Jo’Que Hunt.
